In Appreciation Of Robert Smith And The Cure
Robert Smith’s music has been part of the soundtrack of my life, starting back in the early 90’s when I listened to tapes and heard his music everyday on my favorite radio station, 91x. Back then, I didn’t really care about goth, hardcore, alternative, or metal because it was all the same, and I had a steady dose of good music to listen to on a daily basis.
From The Cure, to Alice in Chains or Pearl Jam, the radio was my best friend as I spent many happy hours traveling around town while playing my favorite music.
Fast forward to 2024 and Smith is still rocking with The Cure, despite being 65 years young. His music and voice have remained exactly the same and that’s inspiring to me because when I listen to The Cure it takes me back to my teenage years in San Diego.
About Robert Smith
Robert Smith, born on April 21, 1959, in Blackpool, England, embarked on a musical journey that began with his family’s piano and later transitioned to the guitar. In 1976, he formed The Cure in Crawley, Sussex, as a punk outfit. The band’s debut album, Three Imaginary Boys, marked their arrival. However, it was subsequent records, such as Seventeen Seconds and Faith, that truly solidified their darkly atmospheric style, showcasing Smith’s resilience and commitment to his unique sound.
Smith’s lyricism delves into themes of love, loss, despair, and hope, resonating deeply with listeners from all walks of life. Albums like Disintegration (1989) are hailed as masterpieces, blending lush soundscapes with lyrics that explore vulnerability and existential questions. Tracks like “Pictures of You” and “Lovesong” showcase Smith’s ability to craft intimate and universal music, creating a sense of connection among his diverse audience.
Constantly Changing
One of the things that I love about Robert Smith is that as an artist he’s constantly changing while seemingly staying the same.
The Cure’s discography spans a range of moods—from the brooding Pornography to the pop-infused optimism of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. Smith’s artistic versatility and authenticity have earned him admiration across generations, influencing artists from Nine Inch Nails to Smashing Pumpkins.
Offstage, Smith’s humility and wit shine through, often contrasting his public persona as a harbinger of gloom. His down-to-earth nature and quick wit endear him to fans, while his fierce protectiveness of his creative vision, overseeing every aspect of The Cure’s work, from songwriting to production, commands respect.
Timeless Music
Because Robert Smith has been so prolific in his career, while staying true to his unique style of music, I can easily say that his music is timeless.
Listening to The Cure again has given me creative inspiration as I face turning 50 un just over one year. I realize that I can stay true to my artistic and creative vision, like Robert Smith, while continuing to enjoy the same things that I loved when I was younger.
If you haven’t listened to the latest album by The Cure, Songs of a Lost World, do yourself a favorite and listen to it today, you wil be glad that you did.
